The Secret Art of the Glass Engraver.
Zest Gallery announces the opening of a new exhibition, Deep Surface, which showcases the work of glass artists who use various engraving techniques to create extraordinary effects and graphic depth on glass vessels and objects.
Glass engraving dates back to Roman times, yet it is quite rare to get a chance to see the work of contemporary engravers. This is because the painstaking and time consuming traditional techniques employed mean that engravers tend to produce very little work. By contrast, a photographer can produce more work in a day than the average glass engraver produces in their whole career.
In Deep Surface, we have selected a group of artists who use a variety of different techniques. These range from copper wheel engraving, developed by the Romans and still in use today, to more contemporary methods such as sandblasting and cutting.
A number of artists in the exhibition belong to the prestigious Guild of Glass Engravers, including Jonathan Harris, Patricia Hilton-Robinson and Alison Kinnaird, MBE. Talented newcomers in the exhibition include Lucy Batt and Heather Gillespie.
There will be a number of events during the exhibition, including Artist Talks.
