Bonhams - Art Glass Sale 19th May 2009
We are very privileged to have been invited as one of just fifteen artists by Dan Klein, world authority on contemporary glass, to produce two works of art for an exclusive 20th Centuary Artglass sale at Bonhams comprising classic and contemporary art glass!
We are delighted to give you a sneek preview of the two pieces Jonathan has been commisioned to produce for Bonhams glass auction taking place in May. Dan Klien invited Jonathan to participate in the auction that takes place on Tuesday 19 May and viewing on Sunday 17 May 11am-3pm & Monday 18 May 9-4.30pm. Apparently, this auction, the first of its kind has created considerable interest and if you would like any further details or a catalogue please contact email@example.com from 10 April. If anyone decides to place a bid on any of the items in the auction, good luck and please let us know how you get on!
What an exciting year ahead-we hope to exceed your expectations and thank you for supporting British Art-at its best! Watch this space!
Jonathan Harris hand carved silver cameo footed vase – ‘Twilight flight’
Scarlet fading to terracotta cased core colour. Opal white, copper blue, lavender and indigo enamel layers finished with multiple layers of hot fused sterling silver leaf. The design is hand carved using diamond point drills and contemporary carving techniques to create a tactile cameo in fine detail and relief. The internal colour layers of the vessel are carved with an under story of foliage and two owl chicks creating an intriguing backdrop to the dramatic swooping owl carved in detail on the outside. The dual surface carving of both the inside and outside layers of the form combine through translucency to bring together a three dimensional design.
Jonathan Harris hand carved Intrinsic Cameo vase
‘Jungle foliage’ Inspired by the miniature paintings of Jodhpur.
Copper blue, gold amethyst and indigo triple inside cased internally carved intrinsic cameo. Jonathan has developed innovative carving techniques selectively carving through layers of pure colour on the inside of the form. A thick sumptuous casing of crystal glass forms an optical lens focusing on and magnifying the detailed carving in high relief. Vibrant shifts of colour are encapsulated amidst the three dimensional imagery as sparkling light is captured within the form. Logic suggests that conventional glass cameos are subdued and opalescent with a matt surface. In contract, intrinsic cameo exploits unique glass qualities of transparency and translucency to create carved cameos which are colourful, glossy and extremely ‘glassy’.
